Startups for youth and women at home.

There are many kinds of home business you can start with very little capital, a little skills training, networking with other home based farmers and learn. You can also benefit their networks in marketing. This is a simple startup on poultry farming. You can use local materials to make a brooder in an exiting house or structure that is leak proof, warm and protected from winds, has good lighting. You only need a stapler to join the boxes, lign the inner side for strength and curving with binding wire or bendable twigs or tree branches, have some wood chippings from a timber saw mill. Day old chicks cost about Ksh. 100/= so 50 will cost Ksh. 5000/=,  10kgs starter feeds for the first 2 weeks about Ksh.600/=, feeder trays can be bought or from your kitchen, then local made affordable feeders as they grow older. Disinfectant and check start booster will cost you about Ksh. 500/= in total. The total cost of raising the chicken to maturity if you learn to free range them early after fully vaccination will be approximately Ksh 10,000/- on disease management as well as vaccines. At 5 to 6 months, you can start selling eggs or table chicken  between Ksh. 800-1200/= depending on the demand and timing( festive seasons are best to target). The good thing is, you do not need labour for this. To warm chicks at night, use the earthen warmers often called nyungu, they consume very little charcoal and stay warm for long. These are our Skills for Life initiatives to get young unemployed people to start some income generating initiative instead of just sitting at home, being taken care of by parents or tarmacking endlessly.   Check our tips also on our Twitter handle @kaenmc

Empowering Kenyan Youth Through Practical Agribusiness Skills

We empower Kenyan communities, especially the youth, with the tools, skills, and financing they need to grow thriving agribusinesses and sustainable enterprises. From education to micro-financing, our mission is simple: help every family live a decent, dignified, and fulfilling life. Together, we’re planting the seeds of a stronger, happier Kenya. We will run tailored online Agribusiness Training Skills for youth. “Enrolment at public universities dipped for the first time in three years in a period that saw the intake at technical colleges offering diploma and certificate courses increase 22 percent”. This indicates a growing desire for practical Skills for Life, Livelihoods and Income generation rather than a scram for degrees and certificates. The job market no longer guarantees youth income and independence, an increasing number of young adults are living with their parents well into their 30s, driven by high living costs, unemployment. This is what we seek to mitigate by offering trainings on Agribusiness Startups on SMALL spaces Agribusiness, SMART and Climate Responsive Agriculture, urban farming, vertical farming. We train on inception of farming for individuals and groups, selection of value chains, skills for capital and resource mobilization including fundraising from charities, foundations and other funders, project cycle management, risk assessment, access to markets bypassing brokers, peer learning and online benchmarking with successful farms, linkages to successful youth farmers for coaching and mentorship, online farmers newsletter, sourcing quality farm inputs from our trusted vendors as well as marketing on our platforms for free among others. At the end of training program, each participant will get a certificate of participation. These certificates add value to job hunting with NGOs since you have foundational skills and they require less effort, time and resources training you. Also, you are ahead in search of paid internship as well as volunteer work give the skills you will have already. Training Schedules are customized for evening classes for days from which every individual can chose their best days to cover full content. A brochure and training schedules will be sent upon registration. Notes are available after every training session and follow up questions can be channeled through the Trainees WhatsApp Group. Funding Opportunities for Individuals, Companies, Entrepreneurs as well as SHGs, CBOs and NGOs will be shared in the group as well going forward.
